Let’s make a whole colony of bats! This little free crochet pattern is so easy and fast, you will not be able to stop crocheting! It doesn’t take a lot of materials to create your little bat, so it makes a fantastic stash buster!
You can vary the size of your bat by adjusting the size of the crochet hook and the thickness of the yarn. For the bats in the photos, I used a 3mm crochet hook with matching yarn and they are 15 cm (6 inches) wide and 4 cm (1.5 inches) high. The head/body for the bat is worked in rounds, the wings and ears are crocheted in rows. Let’s get started!
Materials
- Crochet hook
- Yarn (2 colors: color A for bat itself, color B to embroider the face)
- Fiberfill for stuffing
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sc2tog = single crochet 2 together / sc decrease
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
sl st = slip stitch
(..) = number stitches in that row or round
rep = repeat
* – * = repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed
sc3tog = Insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull loop through stitch, repeat 2 more times. You should now have 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
dc3tog = Yarn over, insert hook in next st; yarn over and pull up a loop; yarn over and pull through 2 loops, repeat 2 more times. Eventually you have 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on your hook.
Head/Body
Start with magic ring.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in magic ring (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st*, rep * around (18)
Round 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts*, rep * around (24)
Rounds 5-7: sc in each st around (24)
Round 8: *sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts*, rep * around (18)
Round 9: *sc2tog, 1 sc in next st*, rep * around (12)
Start stuffing…
Round 10: sc2tog around (6)
Fasten off and leave a long tail to create a loop for hanging.
Wings (make 2)
Ch 14.
Row 2: ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc, hdc, dc3tog, hdc, sc, sc2tog (7)
Row 3: ch 1, turn; sc, [tr, dc] in next st, [hdc, sc] in next st, 3 tr, dc, 2 sc, sc (12)
In same st, work 2 sc. Then, sl st and fasten off. Leave a yarn tail in order to sew the wings on the head/body.
Ears (make 2)
Start with magic ring.
Row 2: ch 1, turn; 2 sc in first st, (sc, dc, sc) in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st (8)
Row 3: ch 1, turn; sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts (10)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail in order to sew ears to the head.
Eyes & Mouth
Use the second color of yarn to embroider the eyes and mouth.
