AMIGURUMI HIPPO CROCHET PATTERN

free amigurumi HIPPO crochet pattern

Meet Hady, the pink Amigurumi Hippo, who is all fresh and chirpy as she makes her entry into the Craft Passion library. This Hippo Amigurumi Pattern is the second animal of Craft Passion’s latest Animal & Wildlife Amigurumi series after Leon, the Amigurumi Lion. Now Leon won’t be so lonely anymore. If you have tried Leon, MooMoo, or Aile, you will find many similarities between them, which will make this Amigurumi Hippo crochet pattern an easy one to do

Hady the Amigurumi Hippo stuffed animal stands at about 11.5” and when sitting, is about 9” tall. Crocheted from DK lightweight acrylic yarn, I used a 2.5mm hook to make her in this ideal huggable size. She makes a really good huggable stuffed hippo toy, so making her for children as a gift is a great idea. This hippo amigurumi design is quite flexible too, a different type of yarn will give you a hippo soft toy in a slightly different size.

You will end up making a bigger hippo crochet animal with a heavier yarn (e.g medium yarn with a 3.0mm hook) or a smaller hippo by using lighter baby yarn (with a 2.0mm hook). Crochet tension will also affect its size; my tension is quite snug so my amigurumi hippo may be slightly smaller than yours.

Hady, the hippo amigurumi is adorable and what’s different is that she is actually wearing a bikini suit! Have you ever seen a hippo in a bikini? Oh my, that is such a cute sight! You can see how to crochet this adorable hippo toy here.

Hady is just like all hippos – a perfect day means lying in the sun next to some water, so if it ever gets too warm, she can take a quick dip to cool off before lying back in the sun to warm up. Last weekend was no different.

She woke up early to a beautiful day with blue skies and scattered with cotton-wool clouds. “Yippeee,” she squealed. “Today, I can pack up a picnic and laze in the sun. What a gorgeous day.” And so she dressed in her favorite lime green bikini and trotted happily out the door to the beach with her sun hat and straw tote. She hummed a happy song as she went along the short little path, occasionally stopping to smell the fresh sea breeze. “How lucky I am to live so near to the beach,” the crochet hippo amigurumi thought to herself. “A quick cool dip is only 10 minutes away.”

Within minutes, she reached the welcoming sandy seaside. Joyfully she spread out her beach mat and sat down with her book. She was contentedly reading when a shadow fell across her book. Looking up, she saw Sill the Amigurumi Sloth smiling down at her.

“May I join you?” Sill asked. “But of course!” Hady replied joyfully. “This will be even more fun now.” And that was how they both spent the rest of the beautiful, sunny weekend.

A trip to the beach won’t be as much fun without all the cute beach amigurumi accessories. These free crochet patterns can be used on other amigurumi animal designs too, so taking time to crochet them will be worth it.

AMIGURUMI HIPPO WITH DMC HAPPY CHENILLE. FREE PATTERN!

I’d love to share with you all my enthusiasm for my first amigurumi with chenille yarn, the “Flower Power” Hippo! The PDF file with step-by-step photos and written instructions is completely free for you to enjoy.

Last summer I used DMC Happy Chenille for the first time and it won me over! I must admit I’m a huge fan of DMC yarns – all my Globetrotters and many more projects are made with DMC Natura and Happy Cotton. Could I not try their new chenille yarn?

Happy Chenille is a super soft 100% polyester chenille yarn (this means it’s vegan!). The thickness of this yarn makes the crochet work smooth and quick too, plus there is no need to work tight to get that stiff work suitable for amigurumi.

I chose this yarn to make the “Flower Power” Hippos because it is perfect for simple patterns which give immediate gratification. The chenille texture makes these funny crochet animals even more adorable! This yarn has a good stitch definition, so it is also recommended for those who have recently learned to crochet!

The irresistible temptation to try all of Happy Chenille’s colors and combine them together has led to this family of crochet hippos. After making the first it was impossible to stop!

Here are the Flower Power Hippos, presented one by one:

  • “Peace” hippo: with a gray body (012 Hefalump x2 balls of yarn) and a rainbow crochet sweater
  • “Dance” hippo: with a lime-colored body (029 Fizzy x2 balls of yarn), a two-layer skirt and a flower behind the ear!
  • “Sing” hippo: with a turquoise body (030 Surfs Up x2 balls of yarn) and red dungarees decorated with a daisy

The PDF pattern includes the list of all DMC Happy Chenille colors used and step-by-step photos to make all 3 dresses that are worked separately without sewing them to the hippo. Try on different outfits and make your hippos a colorful wardrobe. Add flowers and details to them to make fun hippie hippos!

Do we have any tips to work chenille in an easier way? Yes, of course!

Tip 1: Chenille/velvet yarn has a different structure than classic wool or cotton yarns so it must be worked with care, but that doesn’t mean it’s difficult! At the beginning we just have to feel the thread and the movement of the crochet hook, making the first stitches slowly, without the haste of wanting to complete the project in the blink of an eye 😉

Tip 2: Reading the diagram you will notice that I DO NOT use the magic ring to start the pieces. To close the magic ring you have to pull tight on the thread, this is more tricky with a chenille yarn and sometimes breaks the thread. This step may not be very easy with a chenille yarn but the chenille yarn behaves very well starting the work in the round with 2 chains. Try both techniques and use your favorite!

Tip 3: Counting the stitches could cause headaches… but even in this case there is a solution: use a contrasting color tail of yarn so it stands out of the crochet fabric and you will always have the situation under control! (Click here for the photo tutorial)

I hope these tips will make your first crochet experience with chenille easier and “Happy”!

Notes from Underground Crafter:

  • This pattern uses U.S. pattern abbreviations. The Craft Yarn Council has a full list of abbreviations here.
  • This pattern uses sc2tog as the decrease (listed as dec 1 st). New Stitch a Day has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.
  • You can find helpful magic ring tutorials by Oombawka Design here (photo tutorial) and here (video tutorial).

It‘s a well-known fact that hippos are great at baking. And Nelly loves spending her days kneading dough, cutting out cookies – and licking the bowl when she‘s finished. After all, what‘s the harm in carrying a few extra pounds?

I am so excited to share this free hippo crochet pattern with you. I first made this hippo when Emerson was a baby and it was my very first time ever making something without a pattern. I finally decided to create a pattern for it and thought it would be perfect for Christmas time. Who doesn’t want a hippopotamus for Christmas, right?

I’ve included instructions for the little Santa hat and the bow. You can also leave the hippo plain if you want one for everyday. I think they turned out so cute! Emerson loves the one with the Santa hat and couldn’t wait until I was finished taking pictures of it so she could play. We named them Jingle & Joy

Amigurumi Hippopotamus – A Free Crochet Pattern

free amigurumi HIPPO crochet pattern

Happy Friday friends! I’m excited to share this hippopotamus pattern with you. I have always loved hippos and was thrilled to create this cuddle sized friend for my daughter!
My two oldest girls turn 6 next week, one requested my variegated llama I was already working on and one wanted a purple hippo.
Because it’s also Christmas time, I had the song ‘I want a hippopotamus for Christmas’ in my head every time I sat down to crochet. My daughters will share that I even sang it out loud from time to time!
I made my hippo in a girl version with eyelashes but you could easily exclude them for a boy version. They would also be super cute in a grey or blue color!
You will want to be familiar with working in a magic circle, changing colors, and using invisible decreases for this pattern. I have a mini photo tutorial for each of theses methods in my Tips to Learning Amigurumi, plus some extras to help along the way.
If you’d like to be notified when new patterns are released you can sign up for my newsletter here! Be sure to also join the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook where you can share your work, ask questions and interact with others who have a passion for crochet!
I use plastic safety for the majority of my projects (like this one) but when I am making them for children under 3 I love to use these as an alternative instead!

Crochet Hippo Applique pattern

free amigurumi HIPPO crochet pattern

Each applique will be shared separately to be easier for you to get the pattern because this one is really long one.  We have 9  crochet appliques – Koala applique , Lion applique , Panda applique , Hippo , Rhino , Elephant , Parrot applique Sloth applique and Crocodile applique. As you know we have so much applique themed blanket and we really appreciate your positive feedback for all of them. If this is your first visit here I am sure you will like our Jungle friends appliques baby blanket / Undersea Sweetness appliques blanket or / Forest friends appliques blanket

THE YARN :

For all my applique I always prefer thinner yarn. The crochet Appliques have so much details and this way it is easier to crochet and attach them. Of course you can use different weight yarn but my suggestion is category 3 weight yarn, DK ( double knit ).
